Case Study of Sandplay Therapy with a 6 Year Old Girl Suffering from Alopecia Areata
Sim Hee-Og

Abstract
This study explored the sandplay therapy case of a 6 year old girl who was suffering from alopecia areata, utilizing the principles outlined in the major sandplay literatures as well as concepts from analytical psychology. The goal of the therapy process was to lessen her symptoms under the free and protected space found within sandplay therapy. The course of treatment consisted of 39 sessions of sandplay therapy. The client exhibited her conditions in the initial parts of therapy(sessions 1¡9, the expression of a lack of caring and aggression). This was expressed by putting eggs or young chicks with parents. In the intermediate sessions(sessions 10¡32, searching for herself and filling in missing parts), she repeatedly allowed the therapist to find her in the sandbox; variously identifying with a barbie doll, rabbit, crocodile, tiny girl, and crawling baby and filling in the parts she lacked. In the final parts (sessions 33¡39, the emergence of a new Self), she caught fish using a golden bait and cultivated golden flowers, symbolizing the emergence of her new Self emerged. This study showed the effectiveness of sandplay therapy in dealing with psychosomatic symptoms since the severe alopecia areata was cured.
